The Hoppe family
Their Day Dawn story continued into another generation.
Willy and Ellen's children were Violet, Lilly, Elma and Verner. Their youngest son, Vernon Thomas William “Vern” Hoppe, was born at Day Dawn in 1910.
Vern later served with Australia's 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion during the Second World War. Following the fall of Singapore he became a prisoner of war and was sent to Thailand.
He died from cerebral malaria at Kuii, Thailand, on 19 November 1943, aged 33, and is commemorated at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.
