Cue Lookout

Head just north of town for sweeping views across Cue and the wide Murchison landscape. It is a simple stop, but one of the best places to appreciate just how much country surrounds the Queen of the Murchison.

From the lookout, Cue sits below against a much bigger backdrop of red earth, low rocky ridges, scrub and open sky. The view gives visitors a sense of the scale of the country before they head further into the district.

The lookout is just north of the townsite and is shown on the Cue town map as Water Tank Hill Lookout. You can walk the trail to the top or drive up via Scenic Lookout Access Road, a gravel road leading to the summit.

There are two ways to reach the top, so you can make the lookout a quick scenic stop or part of a walk while exploring Cue.

On foot

Take the walking trail

A walking trail climbs to the lookout from below. It is a good option if you want to stretch your legs and take in the changing views as you make your way up the hill.

By vehicle

Drive Scenic Lookout Access Road

Vehicles can reach the top via Scenic Lookout Access Road. The access road is gravel, so drive to the conditions, particularly after rain.

Late afternoon

Come back for the light

The lookout works at any time of day, but late afternoon is when the Murchison really starts showing off. As the sun drops, the colour moves across the ridges and open country and the view back towards Cue softens with it.

If you are following the Shire's 48-hour itinerary, this is the natural place to finish your first day before heading back into Austin Street for the evening.
