Looking after what we own

Planning for assets over their life

The Shire relies on a wide range of assets to deliver services to the community. These may include roads, buildings, recreation facilities, plant, equipment and other infrastructure.

Asset management planning helps Council understand what assets it has, what condition they are in, what they cost to operate and maintain, and when renewal or replacement may be required.

What do we need to look after?

Assets often have long lives and can create significant future costs. A building constructed today will require maintenance, renewal and eventually replacement. Roads, plant and community facilities create similar long-term commitments.

Asset management helps Council consider these costs early and balance the condition and performance of assets with available financial resources and community needs.

Asset lifecycle

Planning beyond construction

Good asset management considers the whole life of an asset, not just the cost of providing it in the first place.

01
Plan
Understand the service need and the assets required to support it.
02
Maintain
Maintain assets so they remain safe, functional and fit for purpose.
03
Renew
Renew ageing components before condition or performance becomes unacceptable.
04
Replace
Replace, upgrade or retire assets when they reach the end of their useful life.
Integrated planning

Connecting services, assets and finance

Asset planning supports Council delivery by helping identify the infrastructure requirements and long-term costs associated with Shire services.

Balancing today with tomorrow

Maintaining existing assets can compete with new projects for limited resources. Asset planning helps Council understand these competing demands and make better informed investment decisions.

It also helps identify future renewal requirements before they become urgent, supporting more predictable financial and operational planning.
